What Is a Cross Fitting

Cross Pipe Fitting

A cross fitting is a four-way pipe fitting, also known as a cross pipe fitting, pipe cross fitting, or cross pipe. This four-way pipe fitting connects pipes and enables the diversion and transmission of fluids within a piping system. Cross fittings play a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency, safety, and stability of piping systems.

Pipe Cross Fitting Materials

  • Carbon steel: Carbon steel pipe crosses are the most commonly used, such as ASTM A234, ASTM A105, and A234 WPB. They offer excellent strength at a moderate price point.
  • Alloy steel: Resistant to high temperatures and pressures. Examples include WP5 and WP91, frequently used in power plants and petrochemical high-temperature pipelines.
  • Stainless steel: Stainless steel cross fittings offer superior corrosion resistance, effectively extending pipeline system lifespan.
  • Plastic: Materials like PVC, CPVC, and PP. Plastic cross fittings are lightweight, significantly reducing transportation and labor costs during installation.

Cross Fitting Dimensions and Sizes

Cross pipe fittings are available in an extensive size range, denoted by nominal diameter (DN). Common DN sizes range from DN15 to DN2000.
Imperial sizes are typically denoted by NPS, such as NPS 1/2 to NPS 24.

FIREMINUS provides a table outlining the approximate size range for pipe cross fittings and their common applications.

Additionally, FIREMINUS offers a wide selection of cross fitting sizes and can customize fittings for your specific project.

Pipe Cross Fitting Standards

Cross fittings generally comply with the following standard systems:

  • Chinese national standard: GB/T12459, GB/T13401.
  • American standard: ASME B16.9, MSS SP-43. Commonly used in high-pressure and large-diameter pipeline systems.
  • German standard: DIN2605, DIN2615. Used in European engineering system piping.
  • Japanese standard: JIS B2311, JIS B2312. Commonly used in building structural systems or precision instruments.

Cross Pipe Fitting Pressure Ratings and Wall Thickness

Cross pipe fittings’ pressure ratings are classified according to standards. Different pressure ratings correspond to varying wall thicknesses and strengths. Greater wall thickness indicates higher strength.
Low pressure: SCH5/SCH10. Thickness range: 3-6 (mm).
Medium pressure: SCH20/SCH40. Thickness range: 6-12 (mm).
High pressure: SCH60/SCH80. Thickness range: 12-20 (mm).
Ultra-High pressure: SCH120/SCH160/XXS. Thickness range: 20-40 (mm).

How to Select Cross Fittings

Selecting the appropriate cross fitting requires comprehensive consideration of the following aspects to maximize the performance of pipe fittings.

  • Medium: Choose cross pipe fittings made of suitable materials based on the fluid medium, such as:
  • Price and cost: While meeting project requirements, economic viability should also be considered. Lower-cost carbon steel cross fittings or alloy steel cross fittings may be selected.
  • Temperature: For high-temperature applications, consider material creep strength; for low-temperature conditions, verify low-temperature toughness.
  • Installation: When installing, ensure sufficient space is reserved for branch pipe routing around reducer tees.
