ASTM A53 is one of the most widely used steel pipe standards in the world, the standard was customized by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1924 to regulate steel pipe for oil and gas transportation, and as the quality of the work has improved, the standard has been revised 12 times, the last time in 2023. This article presents the ASTM A53 steel pipe specification with all data up to date.
ASTM A53 Steel Pipe
There are three main core data of ASTM A53:
1. Material Classification
According to the pressure scenario, it is classified into grade a and grade b. There was also grade c before 1995, which was later eliminated
2. Process Classification
Type S (Seamless Pipe) uses the hot rolling process, which is suitable for high-pressure environments
Type E (Resistance Welded Pipe) and Type F (Furnace Welded Pipe) by welding process Optimize cost-effectiveness
3. Adaptation standards
Promote international standards, and form synergy with standards such as API 5L and ASME B36.10
This article mainly focuses on material grading and process division, if you have any questions, please contact us.
Material Grading - Gr.B/ Gr.A
Difference in chemical composition between Grade A and Grade B

As can be seen from the table above, the GRADE B standard increases the proportion of manganese-carbon, and as a result, strength optimization can be achieved. Therefore, when choosing piping materials, application scenarios that require piping with stronger pressure resistance, GRADE B is recommended to extend the life of the piping system and ensure safe operation of the piping system.
Process Division
The ASTM A53 standard provides for three types of processes. The three types of processes are not randomly used, but should be selected according to the different materials and application scenarios.
Type S is a seamless pipe production process, the overall pressure-bearing capacity and load-bearing uniformity of this process is better than welded pipe, so high-pressure transmission systems can choose this process
Type E/F is a welded process, the overall cost of the pre-production cycle is much less than the seamless process, in the absence of pressure requirements, the preferred choice,
Below is a table of the three physical properties of the three processes, you can contact us if you have any questions.

ASTM A53 Dimensional Standards
1. Dimensional Tolerances
Outside Diameter Tolerances: For NPS 1/8 to NPS 26 (DN 6 to DN 650) sizes, the allowable deviation of the outside diameter is ±0.79mm to ±1.59mm.
Wall Thickness Tolerances: The allowable deviation of the wall thickness of seamless pipe (Type S) is +20%/-12.5%, while that of welded pipe (Type E/F) requires +15%/-10%. 15%/-10%.
Length tolerance: allowable deviation for fixed length is +19mm/-0mm, and the range of indeterminate length is 4.88m to 12.2m.

2. Hydraulic pressure standard
Hydraulic pressure calculation formula:
P=D2St
Hydraulic pressure test time should not be less than 5 seconds.
3. Non-destructive testing
ASTM A53 has two non-destructive testing methods:
UT ultrasonic testing: seamless and large-diameter steel pipe
ET eddy current testing: small-diameter welded pipe, which can quickly detect surface defects.
