Pipe Cap – Function, Classification And Core Advantages

Table of Contents

Pipe Cap, also known as pipe cap or end cap, is a protective device welded or threaded to the end of a pipe. Its main function is to seal the pipeline port, prevent impurities from entering and protect the threads. Unlike a removable Blind Flange, most welded caps are permanent closures.

What is a Pipe Cap

The Role And Core of the Pipe Cap

Pipe cap, can also be called head, plug, cap. It is a pipe fitting that is welded to the end of the pipe or, fitted to the external threads at the end of the pipe, used to plug the pipe. It is used to close the pipeline pathway as well as the role of pipe plugs. According to the different materials, the pipe cap can be divided into carbon steel head and stainless steel head and alloy steel head.

Its core function is to permanently seal the pipeline system, realize no leakage at the end of the pipeline through welding or thread fastening, and its pressure-bearing capacity can reach 42MPa; protect the end thread of the pipeline; prevent the invasion of external impurities and corrosive substances; avoid stress concentration, maintain the pressure balance inside the pipeline; and control the flow rate of fluids. Compared with blind flange, welded pipe cap has no risk of bolt loosening, but welded pipe cap is not removable.

Executive Standard

The international common standards for pipe caps are:

  • ANSI/ASME B16.9: Specification of butt-welded pipe cap dimensional tolerances and pressure ratings
  • MSS SP-43: For thin-walled stainless steel pipe cap special manufacturing requirements
  • API 5L: Oil and gas pipelines with carbon steel pipe cap material and testing standards

Butt Weld Cap and Socket Weld Cap

According to the different connection methods, pipe caps can be divided into Butt Weld Cap and Socket Weld Cap.

Butt Weld Cap (Butt Weld Cap)

Connection method: Butt weld to pipeline by bevel welding

Advantage: High strength, no risk of leakage

Applicable scenario: High pressure oil and gas pipeline, nuclear power facilities

Dimension standard: ASME B16.9, ANSI B16.25

Socket Weld Cap (Socket Weld Cap)

Connection: pipe inserted into socket shoulder and then welded

Advantage: easy installation, no need for precise alignment

Caution: need to allow for thermal expansion gap

Structural Types Of Pipe Caps

  1. Convex Cap

Hemispherical Cap: strongest pressure-bearing capacity but high manufacturing cost

Elliptical Cap: balance between pressure distribution and manufacturing difficulty

Dish Cap: economic low-pressure solution

  1. Conical Shell

Suitable for piping systems requiring gradual diameter changes, commonly found in chemical plants

  1. Variable Diameter Section

Transitional part for connecting different pipe diameters

  1. Flat Cover

Simplest low pressure sealing solution

  1. Constricted Opening

Special design with flow control function Special designs with flow control functions

Industry Applications

  • Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry: Alloy or Titanium alloy caps are generally used for applications requiring greater corrosion resistance in environments such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.
  • Oil and gas industry: API 5L X65/X70 carbon steel pipe caps are commonly used to close the end of oil/gas pipelines to prevent media leakage and withstand system pressure (usually ≥10MPa)
  • Urban infrastructure: epoxy-coated carbon steel pipe caps can prevent rust and corrosion contamination of water quality, commonly used in water pipeline systems. Socket Weld Pipe Caps (SW) are generally used for low and medium pressure gas pipelines.
  • Power and energy sector: steam pipeline ends with butt-welded pipe caps (BW), the material is 15CrMoG alloy steel, heat shock resistance can reduce the generation of thermal stress cracks.
