What Is Pipe Cap - Pipe Fitting
In a piping system, pipe cap is a specialized fitting used to close the end of pipeline. This kind of part seems to be very simple, but it has a vital role in the actual engineering of pipeline. From the appearance, it looks like a “cap” on the open end of the pipe, but in fact its internal structure has to be carefully designed.
According to the different ways of connection, pipe caps are mainly divided into butt-welding type, socket welding type, threaded connection type and groove type.
Among them, the advantages of the three types of pipe caps provided by FireMinus are:
- Butt weld cap: All-welded construction ensures zero leakage.
- Socket welding cap: Angle weld design facilitates inspection.
- Grooved drain cap with concentric hole: Rubber gasket provides elastic sealing.
Pipe Cap Fittings Supply Range
- Butt weld cap for high pressure: max pressure up to class 6000.
- Socket weld pipe end cap for small diameter Instrumentation Piping:suitable for 4” and under.
- Grooved cap for regular drainage, temporary plugging.
- Stainless steel pipe cap for corrosive media.

Typical Application Scenarios
Oil and Gas Transmission
During winter maintenance of the Alaska Pipeline, the crew used Sch160 standard X65 steel caps to temporarily seal the mouth of the pipeline. These caps were required to withstand temperatures as low as -45°C while ensuring an absolute seal at a pressure of 5.0 MPa. The special low-temperature impact toughness treatment makes them perfect for this task.
Chemical Production Units
are often used in chlorination reactor piping systems in pesticide factories, where butt-welding caps made of Hastelloy C276 are generally used. This choice effectively resist the corrosion of mixed acid media, continuous use of 3 years after the demolition inspection, the inner wall is still intact, wall thickness thinning less than 0.1mm.
Municipal Water Supply and Drainage System
Trench-type drainage covers are used for fire fighting pipes in urban underground comprehensive pipe corridors. The Φ15mm drainage holes in the center of these covers can remove water without affecting the pressure-bearing capacity of the pipes. Rubber seals are treated with a special formula that maintains elasticity in wet environments for up to 10 years.
Food Processing Plant
The CIP cleaning lines in the dairy plant are all made of 316L stainless steel with polished caps. The surface roughness is controlled at Ra≤0.8μm, which can fully meet the food grade hygiene requirements. The quick release design facilitates daily deep cleaning and prevents microbial growth.
Pharmaceutical Clean Room
The purified water system of the biopharmaceutical workshop adopts electropolished 304L stainless steel cover. All connections are sanitary welded to avoid dead ends. After 3 production cycles, the water quality has been verified to be consistently within USP standards.
Pipe End Cap FAQ
The difference between pipe caps and pipe plugs
1. Different sealing positions
Pipe caps cover the ends of pipes, while pipe plugs are inserted into the inner walls of pipes.
2. Different installation methods
Pipe caps require welding or groove/flange fastening, while pipe plugs rely on threads and rubber expansion to achieve sealing.
3. Different application scenarios
Pipe caps are used for permanent or semi-permanent sealing of pipe systems, while pipe plugs are designed for removable maintenance.
4. Typical structures
Pipe caps are typically blind flanges, threaded, or grooved, while pipe plugs are primarily threaded with rubber expansion heads.
What are the different types of end caps?
Protective Caps: Temporarily cover pipe ends to prevent foreign objects from entering.
Sealing Caps: Permanently seal pipes.
Threaded Caps: Screw directly into pipe external threads; removable.
Welded Caps: Permanently seal high-pressure pipes.
Grooved Caps: Secure with clamps for easy installation.
Blind Flanges: Used for sealing large pipes.
PVC Caps: Commonly used in drainage systems.
PE Caps: Used in irrigation systems.
Brass Caps: Used in water pipes, with excellent corrosion resistance.
How to permanently cap off water pipes?
Metal pipes can be screwed onto threaded blind flanges and sealed with sealing tape to prevent leaks.
PVC threaded caps with embedded rubber rings are used for plastic pipes to enhance sealing.
Round steel plates are welded directly to steel pipes, which requires professional equipment to operate.
