What Is Pipe Tee - Pipe Fitting

Tee, short for tee fitting, is a common type of plumbing fittings or connector shaped like the letter “T”, which are used in piping systems to divert and merge flow. The purpose of this type of fitting in a piping system is to divert and merge flow. Tee fittings consist of one inlet and two outlets (or vice versa), and are often used to change the direction of fluid or to connect branch pipes.

Tee fittings are categorized according to the connection method and can be divided into the following types.

  1. Threaded Tee

Threaded Tee realizes pipe connection through thread engagement, which is characterized by easy installation and no need for welding. Its size range is usually DN8-DN100 (1/4″-4″).

Its structure type is divided into:

    • Full Thread Tee: three ports are threaded
    • Single Side Thread Tee: two threaded ports and one socket
  1. Grooved Tee

Variable Diameter Thread Tee: different specification threads at both ends

Grooved Connection Tee is the mainstream connection of modern fire protection system, with the advantages of quick installation and good seismic resistance. Its size range is usually DN50-DN600 (2″-24″). The advantage of this type of joint is that it is safe and reliable without the need for fire work. Installation speed is fast.

  1. Flanged Tee

Flanged T-joint is connected by bolting the flange, which is characterized by reliable sealing and high pressure bearing. Its size range is usually DN15-DN3000 (1/2″-120″).

Types of flanges are divided into:

    • Integral Flange Tee: flange and tee integrated casting or forging
    • Welding Flange Tee: flange and tee welding combination
    • Loose Flange Tee: flange can be rotated, easy to install centering
  1. Socket Weld Tee

Socket Weld Tee connects pipes through fillet weld, which is characterized by high strength and easy installation. Its size range is usually DN6-DN100 (1/8″-4″).

  1. Butt Welded Tee

Butt Welded Tee are connected to the pipeline by butt-welding seams and are characterized by the highest strength and lowest flow resistance. Its size range is usually DN15-DN2000 (1/2″-80″).

The structure type is divided into American Butt Weld Straight Tee, Butt Weld Reducing Tee and Butt Weld Tee with Reinforcement.

T-Joint Pipe Fittings Main Features and Standards

Tee - Realize Diverging or Merging

The main feature of tee is to realize diverging or merging.

For example,

Equal Tee: all three ports have the same diameter and are used for equal flow separation.

Reducer Tee: the diameter of the branch pipe is different from that of the main pipe and is used to connect pipes of different diameters.

Tee with Side Outlet: used for diversion needs at specific angles.

Tee piping connector is the key component to realize merging or classifying in piping system. It provides for the efficient operation and safe operation of piping systems.

Tee

Executive Standard

Tee must be manufactured in strict accordance with international or regional standards. This plays a very important role in its high performance and quality.

Common standards include

  • ASME/ANSI B16.9 (USA)

For factory fabricated forged steel butt weld fittings (including T-joints) covering dimensions, tolerances and pressure ratings.

  • API 5L (oil and gas)

Applies to high-pressure T-joints for oil and gas transmission pipelines.
  • ASME/ANSI B16.11

Forged steel fittings (e.g., high-pressure small-diameter tee) covering socket weld and threaded connections.
  • ASTM A234 (carbon/alloy steel)

Butt weld fittings for medium to high temperature service.

Industry Applications

Water supply & drainage

In municipal water networks, tee can change the direction of pipe connections.

Oil, gas and chemical industry

Tee made of stainless steel or alloy steel. to achieve high corrosion resistance.

Industrial fluid Transportation

Commonly used in the food and beverage industry and pharmaceutical industry. These industries have high requirements for sterility, so it is recommended to use tee made of stainless steel.

Fire fighting system

Generally used in fire fighting water pipe network, using flange connection.
