What is a Coupling? In piping systems, a coupling is a mechanical device that connects two shafts. It is used to transfer energy and torque by connecting the driving and driven shafts.
What is a Coupling
Coupling- Carbon Steel / Stainless Steel / Alloy Steel
Coupling is seemingly simple metal ring is actually a central component of modern piping systems. A coupling in the mechanical industry can be interpreted as a part that connects two shafts. It provides flexibility to a mechanical system by adjusting the misalignment of the shafts. This mechanism is very reliable and this flexibility can be achieved by absorbing the mounting errors and misalignments of the two shafts, which in turn prevents the occurrence of wear and vibration due to misalignment.
A coupling is a hollow cylinder used to connect two steel pipes of the same diameter. It is generally available in carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. Carbon steel couplings are generally chosen for economic reasons. For food-grade applications, stainless steel couplings are preferred. Alloy steel couplings are recommended for high-pressure applications.

Core Functions of Coupling Fittings

The main functions of Coupling include:
- Maintains a straight pipeline connection
- Connects the drive and driven shafts to transmit power
- Accommodates misalignment between the axes of the main and driven shafts
- Ensures hermetically sealed transmission of liquids/gases
- Absorbs shock and vibration from equipment
- Withstands system pressures
- Enhances equipment performance
- Introduces protection
Types and Roles of Couplings
Coupling is a key component for connecting two shafts in mechanical transmission, which is used to transfer motion and torque, and at the same time to compensate the displacement deviation between shaft systems. They are divided into three main types according to their structural characteristics and compensation capacity.
This type of coupling has no displacement compensation ability, requires strict centering of the two shafts, and is suitable for high-precision, vibration-free scenarios.
A. Flanged couplings
- Structure: two half-couplings with flanges are bolted together.
- Characteristics: low manufacturing cost, high torque transmission, precision alignment required.
- Applications: machine tool spindles, low-speed heavy-duty equipment.
B. Sleeve coupling
- Structure: Integral sleeve connected to two shafts by key or pin.
- Characteristics: small radial size, but disassembly requires axial movement of the shaft.
- Application: short distance and small torque transmission.
C. Clamping couplings
- Structure: Split shells clamped to the shafts by bolts.
- Characteristics: easy to assemble and disassemble, but poor alignment.
- Application: low speed long shaft transmission.
With displacement compensation ability, is divided into two categories non-elastic element and elastic elements.
A. No elastic element type
Compensate the deviation through mechanical structure, no vibration damping function.
a. Toothed Couplings
- Structure: Internal and external teeth meshing design (e.g. drum-shaped teeth).
- Characteristics: Allow large angular deflection (±3°), high load carrying capacity.
- Applications: metallurgical machinery, heavy rolling mills (e.g. GIICL13 drum tooth coupling).
b. Cross Slider Couplings
- Structure: The center slider is embedded with the grooves of both coupling halves.
- Characteristics: Compensation of radial displacement, easy to wear at high speeds.
- Application: low speed textile machinery.
c. Universal coupling
- Structure: cross shaft or ball cage type articulated.
- Characteristics: Angular compensation up to 45 °, need to be used in pairs to maintain synchronization.
- Parameters: Rated torque ≤ 50kN-m, operating temperature -30℃~120℃.
- Applications: automobile drive shafts, marine propulsion systems.
B. With elastic element type
Improve transmission smoothness by cushioning vibration through elastomer:
a. Plum Blossom Coupling
- Structure: polyurethane plum blossom cushion embedded in two metal claw disks.
- Features: easy disassembly and installation, good buffer performance.
- Applications: servo motors, packaging machinery (torque ≤ 2000N-m).
b. Diaphragm Coupling
- Structure: metal diaphragm set to withstand deformation.
- Features: zero backlash, high temperature resistance (≤300℃).
- Applications: high-speed centrifuges, aircraft engines.
c. Tire Coupling
- Structure: rubber tire-like elastic ring.
- Features: strong ability to compensate for comprehensive displacement, excellent vibration damping performance.
- Application: mining crusher, ship power system.
- Safety Coupling
Automatic disconnection in case of overload, to protect mechanical equipment:
- Shear pin type: pin breakage in case of overload, need to replace spare parts.
- Friction type: Limit torque by friction plate slipping, can be reused.
- Application: conveyor belt drive, heavy stamping equipment.
Coupling Performance Chart
When there is an electrical insulation requirement, the plum blossom coupling is recommended, which has an insulation resistance ≥ 100MΩ.
Diaphragm couplings have a backlash of ≤ 0.01°, which is suitable for performance demanding scenarios with high precision drives.
Type | Displacement Compensation Capability | Vibration Damping | Max Torque | Typical Application Scenarios |
Flange Coupling | None | None | Ultra-high | Precision machine tools |
Drum Gear Coupling | Axial/Angular (±1.5°) | Weak | High | Steel rolling mills |
Universal Coupling | Large angular (≤45°) | None | Medium | Vehicle drive shafts |
Elastomeric Spider Coupling | Radial/Angular | Strong | Medium | Servo motors & CNC |
Tire Coupling | Comprehensive displacement | Extremely strong | Low-Medium | Vibrating screens |
What is the difference between a joint and a coupling?
A joint is a core moving part of a motion mechanism whose core function is to allow controlled relative motion (rotation/oscillation) between connected parts, equivalent to a movable joint in a mechanical system.
A coupling is a rigid or elastic connection between two shafts that transmits torque and compensates for displacement. It is the equivalent of a skeletal joint in a mechanical system.
